Det Norske Måltid is one of Norway’s most prestigious competitions for food and beverages, and this year, Jærbær from Jone Wiig, Sølvsider from Apal Sideri, and Mak Kimchi from Eimealt have made it to the finals. After thorough evaluations by some of Norway’s most renowned chefs and sommeliers, these three, along with many other producers from Rogaland, have impressed with their unique products. See all the finalists here.
Jærbær, established in the autumn of 2023, is known for its production of strawberries in greenhouses—a pioneering approach to berry production in Norway. With over 20 years of experience in vegetable farming at Orre, including winning Det Norske Måltid in 2015 with “Sjitne gulrøtter” (Dirty Carrots), Jone Wiig has now transformed one of his greenhouses into modern facilities for strawberries. Controlled temperature and climate provide stable growing conditions, ensuring top-quality berries all year round.
Sølvsider from Apal Sideri is another exciting finalist, this time in the “Cider of the Year” category. The cider is made with the apple varieties Aroma and Summerred and boasts a rich, concentrated flavor with a dry finish. It also features a crisp acidity and firm bubbles, creating a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Sølvsider has already gained international recognition and has become a symbol of the craftsmanship and passion Dan Olav Sæbø puts into his production.
Mak Kimchi from Eimealt is made using traditional Korean recipes. The finest local ingredients are blended with flavorful Asian spices and fermented using traditional methods without starter cultures. Kimchi is spicy, sweet, salty, umami, and tangy, and complements both hot and cold dishes.
With their places in the finals, Jærbær, Sølvsider, and Mak Kimchi are competing against other top products in Norway within their categories, with the winners to be announced at the grand award ceremony in Stavanger on April 25, 2025. This will be a night to celebrate the diversity of Norwegian food and drink culture, filled with delicious experiences and great entertainment.
We wish Jærbær, Apal Sideri, and Eimealt the best of luck in the finals!
